Punjab is expected to enter its regular winter season in November, but climate change continues to alter weather patterns. The Meteorological Department says winter now arrives later than before, while the period of severe cold has become shorter. These changes have affected seasonal conditions across the province over recent years.
Muhammad Aleem Hassan, director of the Meteorological Department, said global warming and changing atmospheric circulation have delayed winter’s arrival. He explained that these shifting weather systems have changed the timing of seasonal transitions. According to media reports, Punjab may experience a similar pattern this year.

Over the past eight years, Punjab has experienced significant changes in its winter weather patterns. The department’s assessment points to a shorter period of intense cold compared with previous years. These changes reflect wider shifts in the climate and atmospheric conditions affecting the region.
Hassan said Punjab’s severe winter period has decreased from around 75 days to approximately 50 days. This reduction means residents may experience fewer days of intense cold during the season. The department expects a similar duration for the severe cold period this winter.
The delayed arrival of winter also changes the timing of seasonal weather conditions across Punjab. Residents may notice differences in when temperatures begin to fall and when the coldest period occurs. However, the report did not provide specific temperature forecasts for the coming months.

Climate change has altered weather patterns in recent years, making seasonal transitions less predictable. Changes in global heat distribution and atmospheric circulation can influence regional temperatures and rainfall. The department’s observations highlight how these wider changes are affecting Punjab’s winter season.
The Meteorological Department expects winter to begin regularly across Punjab in November. However, the severe cold period may again last around 50 days instead of the previous 75 days. Further weather updates will help clarify how temperatures develop as the season progresses.
