Meta has fixed a privacy issue that caused Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to record conversations without users activating the assistant. The company confirmed the problem after several owners reported unexpected audio recordings and transcripts linked to their devices. Meta has not disclosed the technical cause or the number of affected glasses.
Reports surfaced after users noticed recordings despite disabling settings that allow voice responses without the “Hey Meta” wake phrase. One owner described the issue on Reddit, reporting unexpected recordings across three pairs of second- and third-generation glasses. The reports have raised concerns about how reliably Meta's smart glasses control microphone access.
A Meta spokesperson told Android Authority, “This issue has been resolved.” The spokesperson also said users can manage, review and delete voice logs through the settings for their Meta AI interactions. However, Meta has not explained what triggered the recordings or whether a software update caused the problem.
Under normal operation, Ray-Ban Meta glasses respond to voice interactions after a user activates the assistant. Users can also control certain functions through the glasses' physical buttons. Unexpected recording raises questions about whether the devices consistently follow those controls and communicate recording activity clearly.
The incident adds to wider privacy concerns surrounding wearable cameras and microphones. Earlier reports also raised questions about how Meta handles footage collected through its smart glasses. An investigation earlier this year reported that some recordings reached contractors in Kenya for data labeling used in AI training.
Meta's latest confirmation does not establish that every device experienced the problem. However, reports involving multiple pairs suggest the issue may extend beyond one malfunctioning unit. The company has not released further technical details explaining the reported behavior.
Owners can review voice activity logs in the Meta AI app and delete recordings they did not intend to create. Checking device settings and installing available software updates may also help users monitor their glasses. The incident highlights the need for reliable recording indicators and clear privacy controls in AI wearables.
