Michael Jackson suffered severe scalp burns on January 27, 1984, when his hair caught fire while he was filming a Pepsi commercial at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The shoot featured a staged musical performance complete with pyrotechnics, but sparks ignited his hair as he descended a staircase.
The accident left the pop star with second-degree burns to his scalp and a small area of third-degree burns, requiring medical treatment and a lengthy recovery. Jackson was taken to Brotman Memorial Hospital in Culver City, California, where he received treatment in the burn unit. He later donated the reported $1.5 million settlement from the incident to support burn care, research and reconstructive surgery for other patients, turning a painful episode in his life into an effort to help people facing similar injuries.
How Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire during the Pepsi commercial shoot
The accident happened during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in which Jackson was performing a choreographed musical sequence. As he moved down a staircase, pyrotechnics were set off behind him. Sparks landed on his hair, which quickly caught fire in front of the production crew and audience.Jackson sustained serious burns to his scalp and was rushed to Brotman Memorial Hospital. He was discharged the following day but continued to require medical attention as he recovered from the injuries.
The incident also brought attention to the risks associated with pyrotechnics during entertainment productions. The accident was widely reported and became one of the most memorable episodes of Jackson’s career. It also marked the beginning of a connection between the singer and the hospital that treated him.
Jackson returned to the hospital during his recovery
In April 1984, Jackson returned for reconstructive surgery on his scalp. During his visits, he also spent time with other patients in the hospital’s burn unit, including children receiving treatment for burn injuries. His experience gave him a personal connection to the challenges faced by burn victims. Beyond his own treatment, Jackson became involved in supporting the hospital’s work with patients who needed specialised care and reconstructive procedures. The hospital later recognised his support by naming its burn unit in his honour. The gesture reflected the relationship that developed between Jackson and the medical team following the accident.
The $1.5 million donation to support burn victims
On December 13, 1984, Brotman Medical Center announced the naming of its burn unit in Jackson’s honour. His contribution, reported in later accounts as $1.5 million from the settlement associated with the Pepsi accident, was directed towards supporting burn care, education, research and reconstructive surgery. The donation helped establish the Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children, providing a lasting link between the singer’s personal experience and the treatment of other burn victims.
The contribution was particularly significant because it followed an injury that had placed Jackson himself in need of specialised care.Although the hospital’s administrator did not disclose the donation’s amount in an initial contemporary report, a later US congressional resolution identified the contribution as $1.5 million. The donation therefore became an important part of the story beyond the commercial accident itself.
A lasting connection between a celebrity and burn care
Jackson’s accident was a highly publicised moment, but his support for burn patients gave the episode a broader legacy. His experience in the hospital brought him into contact with people facing injuries and recovery challenges similar to his own, and his contribution was intended to support treatment and research for others. The burn centre later faced financial difficulties as Brotman Medical Center struggled, and reports in the late 1980s said the centre had closed.
Jackson’s contribution had been earmarked for research rather than the hospital’s general operating expenses. The episode remains a striking example of how a serious accident during a commercial shoot led to a charitable contribution connected to the care of other patients. For Jackson, the incident was not only a painful chapter in his life but also the starting point for a lasting effort to help people recovering from burn injuries.
