When it comes to fashion basics with design integrity, Uniqlo are hard to beat. Not only is their global head of design, Clare Waight Keller, a former Parisian couturier with an international reputation, Uniqlo also works with Jonathan Anderson the creative director at Christian Dior in Paris.
The collaboration I want to talk about today, though, is the quiet French brand Comptoir de Cottonier, best known for its sleek and Parisian take on everyday chic, and which is part of the group that owns Uniqlo.
Specifically, I want to highlight the small autumn range they quietly released with Uniqlo this month, and which includes the softest, most elegantly cut cotton barrel cords I’ve seen (and touched!), in a range of spot-on autumnal colours.
We already know barrel trousers are flattering whether you are curvy and tall, or slim and petite, and we also know that the barrel shape is the default cut of fashionable trouser now.
Which is exactly why I want to highlight this particular pair: they are cut with neat and fitted waistline, yet the cut through the leg is relaxed, but not so much that the gentle curve of the barrel cut isn’t visible.
It’s a fine balance and it’s what makes these trousers so stylish and easy to wear. Add to that front and back pockets and you have the kind of everyday trousers that will work for both casual and smart looks.
The navy, black, dark grey and cream pairs have a plush luxuriousness to them that make them suitable for work, paired with an argyle knit and a short coat. While the rich conker brown cords look like they’d go the distance for weekend walks and casual days with a cosy heritage inspired coat.
If you want to go all-in on corduroy, Comptoir des Cotonniers has also created matching short jackets in navy, grey and cream, currently on sale from £59.90 to £39.90.
