As someone who works in fashion, I'm surrounded by great denim. But don't get it twisted: I run a very strict program. Every pair of jeans I buy has to pass a rigorous inspection, and if they don't meet my standards, they go right back. I won't let just any pair take up precious real estate in my tiny NYC closet.
Most jeans I put through said inspection don't work out—but a few elite pairs have met all my criteria recently. From vintage-inspired styles that look like they've been in my life for decades to the low-rise jeans that officially converted me, these are the new jeans taking up residence in my closet.
Best Vintage Jeans: Mother Denim's The Reifler

These jeans stole my heart the first time I put them on. They have that perfectly worn-in, vintage feel that can be surprisingly hard to find in a brand-new pair of denim. If you've been on the hunt for vintage jeans but haven't had much luck, consider these your shortcut. They have a longer inseam that gathers at the ankle in the best possible way, plus subtle fraying along the edges that gives them that extra bit of character. They look like a pair you've loved for years, right from the first wear.
Sizing: Size up one size
Stretch Level: No stretch
Material: 100% cotton
Most Flattering Jeans: AYR's The Secret Sauce

Aptly named "The Secret Sauce," these jeans really do live up to their name. They cinch you in and smooth everything out, while the slightly higher rise helps elongate the legs. They also have a subtle amount of stretch, which I don't typically gravitate toward since I tend to prefer the look of rigid denim. Somehow, though, these maintain that vintage-inspired feel without sacrificing comfort. They're polished enough to wear to the office but equally suited to a night out.
Sizing: True to size
Stretch Level: Snug at first, but stretches with wear
Material: 99% Cotton / 1% Elastane
Softest Jeans: Moussy Vintage's Remake Flair Jeans

The first time I tried on these jeans, my jaw genuinely dropped. They're some of the softest pants I've ever touched, denim or otherwise. Despite having absolutely no stretch, they somehow feel as comfortable as sweatpants, with a lightweight feel and a beautiful drape through the leg. The subtle flare adds a little movement, while the panel detailing gives them a design element that sets them apart from your standard pair of jeans. If you've ever wished your favorite denim felt as comfortable as loungewear, these are the pair for you.

Best Low-Rise Jeans: Aflalo's Leary Jean

Low-rise denim can definitely be polarizing, and I'll admit that I once thought I'd never venture into this territory. Then I tried these, and there was no going back. The way they bunch at the ankle feels so '90s, giving them that effortless, model-off-duty vibe that I can't get enough of. The denim itself is thick and rigid, with a substantial, high-quality feel that makes them look even better on. I'm officially a low-rise convert, and these are the jeans to thank.
A sizing note: In my experience, these run quite small, so I ended up sizing up two sizes. I personally prefer my low-rise jeans to have a baggier, more slouchy fit, and sizing up helped me achieve exactly that.
Sizing: Size up two sizes.
Stretch Level: No stretch.
Material: 100% cotton.
Best Cropped Jeans: AMO Denim's Billie Jeans

Everyone needs a pair like these in their wardrobe. They're ideal for showing off a chic pair of flats or your favorite ankle boots, and they're surprisingly practical when the weather takes a turn. I've learned the hard way that wearing full-length jeans in the rain or snow is less than ideal when the hems drag along the ground and get completely soaked. With these, you get all the style without the soggy mess. Add in the range of great washes and it's easy to see why they've earned a spot among my fall denim favorites.

Best Everyday Jeans: Reformation's Val 90s Mid Rise Straight Jeans

These jeans are a mainstay in my wardrobe. They're affordable, oh-so-wearable, and are cut with a mid-rise waist that feels like the perfect middle ground. The lyocell in the fabric also gives them a comfortable feel, while the perfectly worn-in wash and raw-edge hem lend them a vintage-inspired finish. I find myself reaching for them time and time again, season after season, which is really the highest compliment I can give a pair of jeans.
One important note: I've found that both the fit and comfort can vary quite a bit between washes, so my review is specifically based on the Colorado colorway.

Stretch Level: Slight stretch
Material: 57% cotton / 43% lyocell
Best Classic Jeans: Agolde's '90s Pinch Waist

When you think of great denim, Agolde is probably one of the first brands that comes to mind. These jeans are a classic through and through, with a fit that cinches you in and a polished, French cool-girl-inspired feel. They hit just above the ankle bone, which makes them easy to style with almost anything, and they can make even the simplest outfit look pulled together. One thing to keep in mind is that they feel quite snug at first, but they give and soften with wear. If you’re after a timeless pair you’ll reach for year after year, these deserve a spot in your rotation.
