Modified PS5 consoles can no longer connect to PSN without firmware version 14.10. After the update, gamers will be unable to install jailbreaks or the hypervisor bypass. These exploits let homebrew apps and illegal game copies boot.
Piracy and homebrew supporters on PlayStation systems are being forced to make compromises. To log in to PSN, Sony now demands installing the latest firmware update, version 14.10. PS5 consoles using jailbreaks and exploits may not be able to play purchased games online and access network features.
The PS5homebrew subreddit shared what happens when a console with firmware 14.00 tries to connect to a PSN account. Without updating the software, players are limited to offline capabilities.
The Relapse effect
After modifications to work with software version 13.60, the Relapse PS5 jailbreak found new support. Achieving kernel read/write kernel allows users to experiment with unofficial apps. More concerning to Sony, it opens the door to piracy and playing game backups.
The Byepervisor Reborn exploit is also experiencing a boost in popularity. Like Relapse, this hypervisor bypass ran successfully until firmware 14.00 arrived on September 16th. 14.10 then surfaced on October 1st, which introduced more unspecified security fixes.
Living a PSN-free life
Homebrew enthusiasts on Reddit had avoided the newer firmware releases. While some kept their consoles offline, less cautious users still enjoyed PSN features. However, that’s no longer an option, forcing difficult decisions. The alternative is to wait, hoping exploit developers discover new vulnerabilities.
Lacking network connectivity, multiplayer modes in PS4 and PS5 games are often crippled. If digital licenses aren't verified, titles may not load at all. The PlayStation Store is also off-limits on consoles with PS5 jailbreaks.
Mandating PSN customers update their systems isn't a new phenomenon. Still, other signs suggest Sony has recognized a surge in piracy. Recently, the Overdrive homebrew app disappeared, raising suspicions that SIE filed a cease-and-desist. The storefront listed popular game backups for download.
Clones of the unauthorized Overdrive marketplace soon emerged. Regardless, publishers may also be recognizing the jailbreak threat. Data mining revealed GTA 6 will require software version 14.10 on its release date, despite being single-player oriented.
