Last season, Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement was starring in the World Series as a player.
This year, he'll be starring in the World Series as a media personality.
It was announced on Thursday that Clement will be taking part in the World Series Correspondent program during the Fall Classic between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays.
"Clement will serve as a correspondent for Games Three and Four when the series shifts to Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, providing player-first coverage and creating content across @MLB’s social media channels."
Payton Tolle of the Boston Red Sox is also going to participate, as is Miguel Rojas, who just announced his retirement from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Other prominent players have taken part in the past, including Mookie Betts, Willy Adames, Vinnie Pasquantino and Luis Arraez.
Obviously, Blue Jays fans wish that Clement and his teammates were playing in the World Series, but it just wasn't to be as Toronto slumped to a disappointing 79-83 record, finishing last in the American League East.
And while Clement still has several more years to play, this opportunity could be a good chance for him to see if he enjoys working in the media. He certainly has a good personality and the ability to be conversational.
About Ernie Clement
A 30-year-old native of Rochester, N.Y. who will turn 31 in March, Clement is a six-year veteran of the Cleveland Guardians, Oakland Athletics and Blue Jays.
Thought of as a utility player, he's become a big part of the Blue Jays positional player group, playing 139 games or more in each of the last three years. He's hit .270 with the Jays, popping 31 home runs, and he had a generational run in the playoffs in 2025, hitting .411 with six doubles in 18 games. Obviously, the Blue Jays took the Dodgers to seven games.
This season was a different story, to a degree. He hit .259 with nine home runs and 48 RBIs, which isn't awful on the surface, but it came with a .285 on-base percentage, a 78 OPS+ and a 44.4 percent chase rate, which was in the 2nd percentile, per Baseball Savant.
After Bo Bichette signed with the New York Mets, Andres Gimenez moved to shortstop and Clement became the team's starting second baseman.
Clement is a very well-liked player, as fans appreciate his story of perseverance, his playoff heroics and his general dirt-dog mindset. He was voted into the All-Star Game this season as a starter at second base.
However, despite his resume and accomplishments, the organization is not committed to him being an everyday starter in 2027.
Elsewhere for the Blue Jays
As Toronto looks to build its offense back up next season, there has been speculation that they are interested in Japanese slugger Teruaki Sato, who we discussed here.
