(ANSA) - ROME, 14 OTT - Pope Leo XIV had peaceful night after lung cancer surgery Tuesday, the Vatican said Wednesday.
The 71-year-old Chicago native had a malign tumour removed form his lung, To ensure the procedure was radical, the right lower lobe of the organ was removed, medical sources said.
According to experts, barring any changes in the overall clinical picture, the Pontiff could leave the hospital in 5 to 6 days.
The pope's brother Louis Prevost told the American broadcaster NewsMax that he had received a message immediately after the surgery and his brother was doing well.
"I received a message from his right-hand man: he had come out of the operating room, was awake, felt well, and was in no pain," said Prevost.
Meanwhile hundreds of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square for a Mass celebrated by Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, marking the conclusion of the "Amoris Laetitia" summit dedicated to the family.
However, the thoughts of those present are focused primarily on the pope and his health.
The atmosphere in the square is one of quiet reflection and shared concern, accompanied by the hope of seeing Leo again soon.
Among the faithful are three Colombian sisters who say they pray for the pontiff daily; they had even gone to the hospital the previous day in hopes of seeing him.
"We came to Rome for a vacation, but the Pope's health changed our plans. Now we pray for him every day and hope to see him soon," they said.
Overall, the square holds an atmosphere of serenity and confidence in the pontiff's recovery, especially given the news regarding his condition.
Many are stopping to discuss his health, expressing their closeness and affection.
"We look forward to seeing him soon," is the sentiment shared by the faithful. Among those present is an American couple who arrived with their three-month-old daughter.
For them, the visit to Rome was meant to be an opportunity for the baby to meet the pope.
