Venezuela’s Nobel-winning opposition leader says Washington left her out of talks with the interim government. The State Department says her party was invited.
Machado says the US excluded her from negotiations in Caracas between the interim government and a sector of the opposition. She made the claim in a New York Times interview in Panama, published on Thursday, 15 October, NTN24 reported.
The State Department replied that her party, Vente Venezuela, was invited and that she may enter her country whenever she wants. It matters because Washington backs the talks and lifted sanctions on negotiator Jorge Rodríguez this week.
What Machado Said About the Talks
Machado is the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Venezuela’s best-known opposition leader. She told the interviewer that Washington left her out of the talks led by acting president Delcy Rodríguez, La República reported.
She said she will return “sooner than you imagine” to mobilise supporters for elections, Efecto Cocuyo reported, citing EFE. Her team says she has tried to return seven times and has been abroad since December 2025, Infobae reported.
How the State Department Responded
The State Department told the newspaper that Vente Venezuela, Machado’s party, had been invited to take part in the negotiations. It added: “María Corina has every right to enter her country whenever she wants,” translated here from the Spanish quoted by NTN24.
The statement was not found on the State Department’s own website. The wording rests on the interview and on NTN24, La República and Efecto Cocuyo, which quote it consistently.
Where the Talks Stand
The dialogue table was installed in Caracas on Thursday, 6 August, with US State Department backing, Efecto Cocuyo reported. The government side is led by Jorge Rodríguez, who heads the National Assembly and is the brother of Delcy Rodríguez.
The opposition side is led by Dinorah Figuera, who heads the delegation of the National Assembly elected in 2015. The third round began on Wednesday, 14 October, at a Caracas hotel, Infobae and Efecto Cocuyo reported.
Figuera met Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department shortly before that round. Rubio said her delegation has “full backing” from the top levels of the US government, Efecto Cocuyo reported.
What Machado Said on Oil and Justice
Machado criticised the businessman Alejandro Betancourt, whom outlets link to a Trump administration deal over about a fifth of Venezuela’s oil reserves. She called him a main party responsible for Venezuelans’ suffering, NTN24 reported.
He would not be a viable partner in her government, she said. Oil contracts now being signed would be respected if they comply with Venezuelan law, she said.
Venezuela needs “security, stability and legitimacy” to attract investment, she said, NTN24 reported. She also proposed an independent truth commission to collect victims’ testimony and guarantee reparations.
She said people demand justice and that this is legitimate, Efecto Cocuyo reported. She did not say whether Delcy Rodríguez should be jailed, La República reported.
Pressure From Opposition Voices and the Street
Opposition deputy Henrique Capriles said on Thursday that Delcy Rodríguez seeks to extend her interim term to 2030 and avoid early elections. He read the US removal of Jorge Rodríguez from its sanctions list as an incentive for the talks, Efecto Cocuyo reported.
Machado’s platform, Comando Con Venezuela, has called protests across the country for Thursday, 22 October, to demand an election date. An image in the call suggests 24 July 2027, a date Infobae says a US senator proposed and Vente Venezuela backed.
What It Means for US Readers
Washington backs this process after US forces captured Nicolás Maduro on 3 January, so the Nobel laureate’s complaint tests its credibility. The State Department says it has opened the door to her party, while she says she has been sidelined.
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket bettors gave a 9.5% chance of an election date by 31 December, with about US$148,000 bet (16 October, 12:50 p.m. ET). They gave 29% to Machado entering Venezuela by 31 December and 5.5% by 31 October, with about US$113,000 and US$50,000 bet.
They gave a 4.5% chance that Trump endorses Machado for Venezuela’s presidency in 2026, with about US$124,000 bet. These are bets, not polls, and none of the prices is tied to her interview.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
What Is Not Known
Reports do not say what seat Machado wanted beyond the invitation to her party. They do not show whether Vente Venezuela accepted it.
Her current location is given only as Panama “for now”, and no date for her return is known. The State Department statement could not be checked on an official US page.
It is not known whether the government will accept the 24 July 2027 election date that Infobae says a US senator proposed. Neither Delcy Rodríguez nor the US has set a date.
What Comes Next
The third round of talks continues, and Machado’s platform has called protests for Thursday, 22 October, Infobae reported. Machado says she will return, but Delcy Rodríguez has said she would have to answer to the courts, Infobae reported.
A date for the presidential election is the central open question. The government denies blocking her return, and the US has not said what it will do if the talks stall.
