Members of 1st Wexford (New Ross) Sea Scouts recently travelled to Zeewolde in the Netherlands to take part in Nawaka 2026, an international Sea Scout Jamboree, which was their first trip overseas since 2018.
The New Ross group made the journey overseas, joining thousands of sea scouts from across the Netherlands and around the world for ten days of activities, challenges and events. The group was based in the Lab subcamp, where they camped alongside other groups and had the opportunity to meet Sea Scouts from various countries.
There was plenty of opportunity to get out on the water, as they took part in sailing competitions and tried sculling, using a single oar to propel a boat. The sea scouts also competed in rowing races, as they put their skills to the test with some friendly competition.
Away from the water, the camp had a packed programme of activities and entertainment to fill the evenings. The group explored some of the Netherlands outside the camp, with one of the highlights being a day trip to Efteling, one of the country’s best-known theme parks. Another outing brought the group to the Hansel and Gretel house, a mini theme park and very popular pancake house.
The Wexford group travelled alongside 1st Port of Galway Sea Scouts, making up the Irish contingent, to share the experience while representing Ireland at the international camp. For 1st Wexford (New Ross) Sea Scouts, the trip was particularly special as it was the group’s first international trip since 2018. After an eight-year gap between overseas trips, returning to international scouting was “a significant milestone for the group”, according to the leader Alex Kelly.
“The trip gave the Scouts the opportunity to develop their skills, experience new activities, explore a different country and make friends with scouts from around the world. From sailing and rowing competitions during the day to discos and social events in the evenings, there was something for everyone throughout the trip,” Alex continued.
The members of 1st Wexford (New Ross) Sea Scouts returned home “with plenty of stories to tell and memories that will last for years to come”.
“Nawaka 2026 provided the group with a fantastic opportunity to experience Scouting on an international scale, and hopefully marks the beginning of many more international adventures for the group in the future,” Alex concluded.
