Today’s Focus
Lithium shares ended Tuesday mixed. The Global X Lithium & Battery Tech fund (LIT) fell 0.53% to US$64.27.
Albemarle, a US producer with Chilean operations, rose 1.19%, while SQM slipped 0.13% in New York and 1.6% in Santiago.
The fund tracks company shares, not the lithium price. For US investors, it is the main listed way to follow the battery supply chain.
What matters today. Lithium equities split, with no sign of a sector-wide move.
01 The session in one read
The LIT fund closed at US$64.27, down 0.53%. Albemarle closed at US$95.77, up 1.19%, and SQM at US$60.05, down 0.13%, according to RT.
In Santiago, SQM’s B shares fell 1.6%. The two listings close at different times, which explains part of the gap.
We could not confirm a lithium carbonate price or a company-specific news item for Tuesday.
Assessment — Equity divergence, not a commodity signal LOW
The moves look like stock-level trading rather than a change in lithium prices, because no spot lithium price is verified for the day. The softer dollar was the only broad background factor. What is not known is whether lithium prices themselves moved.
02 The board
LIT is an equity fund, not a spot lithium price. It tracks a basket of lithium miners and battery makers.

The session read
The Ibovespa rose 1.57%, with breadth evenly split — 2 of 4 names higher. IPC MEX led, while IPSA lagged.
03 What moved it
No single commodity shock explains Tuesday. Albemarle gained while the fund fell, which points to stock-level flows.
China’s central bank left its loan prime rates unchanged on Tuesday, at 3.0% for one year and 3.5% for five years, in line with forecasts, according to the RT calendar. China’s foreign direct investment (FDI) figure was listed with a forecast of −4.8 and a previous reading of −5.3, but no published actual was available to us.
The US dollar index fell about 0.3% to 101.7 on Tuesday, according to RT. That is a mild tailwind for dollar-priced commodities but did not lift the fund.
04 The Latin American read
Chile and Argentina are the two Latin American countries that mine lithium at scale, and both hold large brine resources. Bolivia also holds large resources but production there is far smaller.
SQM and Albemarle both work in Chile’s Atacama salt flat, so Chile’s output matters for global supply.
05 The names to watch
SQM is the main Chilean listed name, with shares in both Santiago and New York. Albemarle is the largest US-listed producer.
The gap between SQM’s two listings on Tuesday shows why we cite the time and exchange of every price.
06 The outlook
Lithium equities need a verified price signal to find a direction, such as a lithium carbonate quote or a battery demand update.
Until then, LIT at US$64.27 is the reference level for the listed sector.
07 What to watch
- A lithium price signal: A verified carbonate price would show whether equities lead or lag the metal.
- Albemarle and SQM: Whether the two producers move together again.
- The dollar index: It stood at 101.7 after a fall of about 0.3%.
- Chilean and Argentine output: Supply data from the two main producers.
