KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional will know this week whether it can use its logo in the upcoming Melaka polls, with the High Court here set to hear its application to stay the Registrar of Societies' (RoS) suspension order on Thursday.
The application is among four high-profile court cases scheduled for this week, including two related to the Negri Sembilan crisis and a defamation-related contempt action.
The High Court here had earlier allowed PN to proceed with a judicial review of two RoS notices but refused to suspend the order pending the outcome of the review.
PN is seeking to quash a suspension order dated Sept 23, issued under subsection 13(2A) of the Societies Act 1966. The order suspended all PN activities except those related to responding to a notice of intention to cancel its registration.
The other notice, dated Sept 22, proposed cancelling PN's registration and gave its chairman 30 days to make representations.
The outcome could have significant implications for the coalition, with the Melaka election scheduled for Nov 14.
Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya will hold case management today for an appeal by Datuk Mubarak Dohak and five others against a July 8 High Court decision allowing Negri Sembilan's Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) and its secretary, Raja Norazli Raja Nordin, to initiate contempt proceedings against them over an alleged breach of a June 5 injunction.
The High Court had also refused to stay the contempt proceedings pending their appeal, prompting them to seek a stay from the Court of Appeal.
On July 29, the appellate court granted an interim stay barring the Seremban High Court from proceeding with the contempt case. On Sept 7, it reserved its decision on the stay application.
The six include Mubarak, the disputed Undang Luak Sungai Ujong; Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad, the disputed Undang Luak Jelebu; and Datuk Abdul Rahim Yasin, the disputed Undang Luak Rembau.
The others are Johol Undang Datuk Muhammed Abdullah, Tunku Besar Tampin Tunku Syed Razman Tunku Syed Idrus Al-Qadri and Datuk Seri Badarudin Abdul Khalid, whom the DKU says was removed as Shahbandar Sungai Ujong on July 30.
Separately, the Seremban High Court has fixed Wednesday for case management of a suit filed by 10 former Negri Sembilan executive councillors challenging the validity of their removal.
The revocation was gazetted by order of Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, citing a breach of their pledge of allegiance.
The High Court will also hear a committal application today by entrepreneur Christy Ng and her company against J. Vikneshvra Rau, who operates the "archnionverse" Threads account.
The application stems from Vikneshvra's alleged failure to comply with a court order to publish a full-page apology in two major newspapers after a defamation suit over statements he posted last year.
