Kenya’s Mashujaa Day Holiday on Tuesday 20 October

KENYA · PUBLIC HOLIDAY

Kenya stops for its heroes next Tuesday, and the national parade heads to the country’s running capital. Here is what that means for anyone travelling.

Kenya marks Mashujaa Day, its national Heroes Day, on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The main state ceremony moves this year to Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, in the Rift Valley.

For US visitors, the day brings closed government offices and banks, heavy security around official events and busy roads. Anyone flying in that week still needs an electronic travel authorisation before boarding.

What Mashujaa Day Is

Mashujaa means heroes in Swahili, Kenya’s national language and, with English, one of its two official languages. Article 9 of the 2010 Constitution names Mashujaa Day on 20 October as one of three national days.

The other two are Madaraka Day on 1 June and Jamhuri Day on 12 December. All three are public holidays, so schools, courts and state offices close nationwide.

The date recalls 20 October 1952, when colonial authorities declared a state of emergency and arrested independence leaders. Among them was Jomo Kenyatta, who later became Kenya’s first president.

Before 2010 the holiday was called Kenyatta Day. The new name widened it to honour everyone who fought for independence and helped build the nation.

Why Eldoret Hosts the 2026 Celebrations

The national ceremony rotates between counties, and 2026 brings a new format. Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties co-host it, the first time three counties share the role.

The government first planned to hold the event at Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet. President William Ruto moved the main ceremony to Eldoret on Monday, 13 July 2026, Kenyans.co.ke reported.

Citizen Digital reported on 25 September that Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, with 15,043 seats, would host the main event. Kapsabet Stadium in Nandi and Kamariny Stadium in Iten each hold 10,000.

At that time the Eldoret stadium was 68% complete, according to the steering committee. Its chair, Raymond Omollo, is principal secretary for internal security and national administration.

Omollo said he was confident the venues would be ready, while admitting that considerable work remained. Road upgrades in Eldoret, Kapsabet and Iten were still under way in late September.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the three-county arrangement. The Standard quoted him calling it a sign of the government’s commitment to inclusivity, equity and national unity.

Who Is Who

William Ruto is Kenya’s president and leads the Kenya Kwanza government. Steering committee chair Raymond Omollo has urged residents to welcome the visitors and dignitaries joining the president in Eldoret.

Kipchumba Murkomen heads the Interior Ministry, which runs national security and the holiday’s organisation. Raymond Omollo, his principal secretary, chairs the steering committee preparing the venues.

The stadium is named after Kipchoge Keino, the Kenyan runner who won Olympic gold in 1968 and 1972. Eldoret calls itself the City of Champions because so many distance runners train nearby.

What Closes on the Holiday

Government offices, courts and public schools close on Tuesday, 20 October. Banks also close for the public holiday, so plan cash and transfers for Monday or Wednesday.

Shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and safari lodges usually stay open on national days. Some smaller shops in town centres close or open late, so check hours locally.

Tips for US and Foreign Visitors

The State Department asks US citizens to obtain an electronic travel authorisation before entry. Apply only through the official government portal at etakenya.go.ke, not through private agents.

Your passport must be valid for six months beyond arrival, with two blank pages. Travellers arriving from yellow fever countries must show a vaccination card or risk refusal at the border.

The State Department’s Level 2 advisory, issued on 28 July 2026, cites crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest, health and traffic risks. It says demonstrations are common and can turn violent.

National days draw large crowds and a heavy police and military presence around official venues. Keep away from political gatherings and follow police directions near Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

In Nairobi, the department rates the Eastleigh and Kibera neighbourhoods at Level 4, do not travel. It also warns that robberies by people on motorcycles are frequent.

Do not hail taxis on the street, and use firms your hotel or airport kiosks recommend. Matatus, the privately run minibuses, are a particular target for criminals, the department says.

US bank notes should be printed after 2014 and free of tears or marks. Kenya requires paperwork for cash over US$10,000 or the equivalent in shillings.

Travellers who were recently in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda or Tanzania face extra Ebola screening. They must complete Kenya’s electronic traveller health surveillance form.

What It Means for You

If you are in Kenya on Tuesday, treat it like a US federal holiday with extra security. Banking, visa extensions and government paperwork will have to wait until Wednesday, 21 October.

If you are heading to Eldoret or Iten to see the runners, expect crowds and roadblocks near the stadiums. Book rooms early, because officials have told residents to prepare for visitors and dignitaries from across Kenya.

What Is Not Known

The Interior Ministry had not published the ceremony start time or a list of road closures in Eldoret by 14 October. Reports of the 2026 theme also differed between Citizen Digital and The Standard.

It is also unclear whether all three stadiums were finished on time. The last public completion figures dated from late September, when the Eldoret venue stood at 68%.

What Comes Next

After Mashujaa Day, Kenya’s next national holiday is Jamhuri Day on Saturday, 12 December 2026. The country then heads toward general elections on Tuesday, 10 August 2027.

The State Department says violent protests are most common in Nairobi and western Kenya. Visitors should keep checking its Kenya page before and during any trip.
