Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield did not practice on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Raymond James Stadium.
Mayfield is working his way back after suffering a thumb injury that knocked him out of the Bucs’ Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
“Nothing’s changed. He’s getting better,” Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said of Mayfield.
Bowles said Mayfield will try to throw Wednesday afternoon, and the Bucs will evaluate what they see.
“See how much he throws and how he looks,” Bowles said.
Bowles emphasized the importance of Mayfield being fully healthy.
“If he’s not 100 percent, he doesn’t need to play,” Bowles said.
Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels out of Kansas has replaced Mayfield under center. Daniels led the Bucs to their first win of the season on Thursday night, defeating the Dallas Cowboys, 24-16.
Mayfield has struggled against the Steelers in the regular season. In seven games as the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, he went 2-5 against Pittsburgh, and his 76.3 passer rating against the Steelers is his fifth-worst of any opponent. He’s also been sacked 29 times by the Steelers — 12 more than second-most Baltimore.
The Steelers are currently 3-point favorites for their Week 6 road game against the Buccaneers, according to odds posted at DraftKings Sportsbook.
The Steelers are -155 on the moneyline, while the Colts are +130. The over/under is 40.5 points.
Pittsburgh certainly has some momentum in its favor, coming off an impressive 34-22 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5.
The Steelers offense was clicking on all cylinders as quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of his 31 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns and running back Jaylen Warren ran for 101 yards and a touchdown while also reeling in six catches for 87 yards and another score.
Alan Saunders and Aaron Becker contributed.
