The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organised route marches across all eight districts of Tripura on Sunday to mark Mahalaya, as part of year-long programmes commemorating the organisation’s centenary, a press statement said.
In Agartala, 997 volunteers participated in the route march, while another 121 people were involved in supporting duties. The march began at Pragati Maidan at 3.30 pm and passed through several parts of the city before concluding at the starting point.
The Agartala march was divided into two groups. The first proceeded from Pragati Maidan through Durga Chowmuhani and Ker Chowmuhani before reaching Colonel Chowmuhani. The second moved westwards along Pragati Road, passing Haradhan Sangha, North Gate and Bidur Karta, before reaching the same meeting point.
The two groups subsequently marched together back to Pragati Maidan, bringing the programme to a close.
The organisers said the march featured the RSS's traditional musical unit, known as the Ghosh band. The coordinated movement of volunteers accompanied by musical instruments formed part of the programme.
Addressing participants at a session following the march, RSS Tripura Prant's co-publicity in-charge G. Kannan spoke about organisational discipline, regular participation in shakhas, character-building and social responsibility.
He emphasised the role of self-discipline, physical and mental fitness, and regular practice in developing individual character. Participation in organisational activities, he said, could help foster a sense of duty, mutual cooperation and the ability to work collectively.
The address also focused on unity within Hindu society, the preservation of cultural traditions and active participation in social life. The speaker stressed the importance of working for the wider community and being prepared to support society when required.
The programme was organised as part of a series of activities planned in Tripura to mark the RSS's centenary. These include Hindu conferences, youth conferences, gatherings of prominent citizens and an initiative to conduct shakhas on the largest possible scale over seven consecutive days.
The initiatives are intended to increase engagement with different sections of society and encourage participation among young people, according to the organisers.
The simultaneous route marches in eight districts were part of this wider programme. The organisers said the activities were aimed at highlighting discipline, coordination and collective participation.
The RSS, founded in 1925, is marking its centenary through programmes across the country.
