A NINETY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD man has been killed in an apartment fire in Barcelona’s Sants-Montjuic district.
The city’s fire brigade was alerted shortly after 6pm and sent eight crews to the building. Firefighters had the flames out by 6.33pm, but the man could not be saved.
Paramedics from the SEM medical emergency service also went to the scene, along with officers from Barcelona’s Guardia Urbana and the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police.

Images of the fire in the block of flats were shared on social media as crews worked.
The Mossos have taken over the investigation into what caused the fire.
Sants-Montjuic is one of Barcelona’s largest districts, stretching from the city’s main railway station to Montjuic hill.
This is the second fatal fire involving an elderly resident in the area this year.
In April, a 92-year-old man died from smoke inhalation after a blaze broke out in his fifth-floor flat on nearby Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. Emergency services were unable to revive him.
