The AFL integrity unit is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the hospitalisation of players Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward following a night out at the weekend, which the club says the pair is “embarrassed” about.
The league’s involvement represents a significant escalation in the controversy engulfing Carlton, with the AFL now examining the events that led to both players requiring medical treatment in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Davies confirmed the development on Wednesday evening as the AFL trade period drew to a close, with the Blues facing questions about the conduct of their players and the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
“It’s an AFL discussion at the moment and we’ll leave it there,” Davies said.
“The AFL are going through a process right now and ultimately, we’ll work with the AFL to get to the end of that.
“We’ve been having discussions with the AFL over the last two or three days, clearly, to make sure that we are at the bottom of that.”
Davies was then asked about the health of the two players.
“That’s the most important thing – they’re OK now, a little bit embarrassed, I guess, to put the club in this position,” Davies said.
He also confirmed another player had been present on Saturday night, “but not in the same situation”.
The investigation comes amid allegations of illicit drug use at a gathering at Hayward’s South Yarra home on Saturday night, although Carlton have not confirmed whether drugs were involved in either player’s hospitalisation.
Reports had widely circulated on Sunday, suggesting that illicit drugs were allegedly involved as the players received medical care. This masthead cannot confirm that illicit drugs were involved in either incident.
The AFL’s intervention means the matter is no longer exclusively an internal Carlton issue, with the league’s integrity department now involved in establishing what occurred and whether any breaches of competition rules or policies warrant further action.
Both players have since been discharged from hospital.
Cowan, 21, was taken to The Alfred hospital after emergency services attended an address in South Yarra early on Sunday morning.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed advanced life-support paramedics responded to an incident about 5.15am, with a man in his 20s transported to hospital in a stable condition.
Carlton subsequently confirmed Cowan had received medical treatment and undergone observation before being discharged.
Hayward, 27, separately admitted himself to hospital after suffering a cut to his head in a fall. The former Sydney forward received stitches before being discharged.
The Blues have maintained that the two players were hospitalised under separate circumstances.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Carlton said its immediate priority was the welfare of both players.
“The club has been in regular contact with both players, with priority for their wellbeing and both players have now received the necessary care relating to their separate circumstances,” the statement said.
The investigation presents an early test of the football department leadership of Davies and chief executive Graham Wright, who are charged with establishing higher standards at a club attempting to rebuild its football program.
Carlton has already begun its own inquiries into the weekend’s events, with the findings expected to be made available to the AFL.
The involvement of the league’s integrity unit also raises questions about how any potential breaches would be dealt with under the AFL’s existing illicit drugs framework.
The AFL and AFL Players’ Association have agreed to a revised illicit drugs policy, including expanded hair testing and a greater emphasis on identifying and addressing repeated drug use.
However, the new framework is not scheduled to come into effect until 2027, meaning the Carlton matter will be assessed under the competition’s existing rules and disciplinary processes.
The investigation does not necessarily mean either player will face disciplinary action, with the league yet to establish publicly whether any wrongdoing has occurred.
Nevertheless, the episode has again exposed the challenges confronting the AFL in managing player behaviour away from football clubs, particularly during the off-season.
Carlton have endured previous off-field controversies, including the illicit drugs case involving Elijah Hollands, adding to the pressure on the club to demonstrate that player welfare and behavioural standards are being taken seriously.
The timing is particularly uncomfortable for the Blues, who have spent the trade period reshaping their playing list and attempting to build momentum ahead of the 2027 season.
Hayward arrived at Carlton from Sydney last year and played 21 games in his first season in navy blue, while Cowan has established himself as an important young defender.
Cowan played 24 games in 2026 and has become a regular member of Carlton’s backline.
The latest controversy threatens to overshadow the club’s list-management work, with Davies now confronting questions extending well beyond recruiting and the composition of Carlton’s playing list.
The central issue for the Blues is no longer simply the medical treatment required by two players on Sunday morning, but what led to those hospital visits and whether the circumstances reveal a broader failure of judgement or conduct.
Those are questions the AFL’s integrity unit will now seek to answer.
