Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Hapenga Kabeta, has urged mining companies in the country to ensure that mineral wealth translates into tangible and lasting benefits for Zambians.
Dr Kabeta says increased mineral production must be accompanied by local value addition, skills development, technology transfer and the growth of local enterprises.
He has advised that mining activities should also protect the environment and improve the welfare of citizens, noting that production targets would be meaningless if they resulted in environmental destruction and left communities without benefits.
The Permanent Secretary was speaking in Lusaka last evening when he officiated at the cultural night gala night held on the sidelines of the 2026 Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka.
He said the Insaka also provides an opportunity for face-to-face engagements that can strengthen professional relationships, generate ideas and facilitate business deals.
Dr Kabeta encouraged participants to establish meaningful partnerships, share experiences and develop strategies that would help unlock Zambia’s mineral potential for the benefit of the people.
He said Zambia needs a productive, innovative, inclusive and responsible mining industry that attracts investment, creates decent jobs, supports local businesses and contributes to long-term economic transformation.
Dr Kabeta noted that the mining sector has continued to attract significant investments in various parts of the country, including the Copperbelt and North-Western Provinces which are contributing to national economic development.
Meanwhile, Dr Kabeta presented awards to organisations recognised for their participation and contribution to the 2026 Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka.
Among the recipients were ZESCO, Konkola Copper Mines, First Quantum Minerals, Anglo American Corporation, Zanaco and Indo-Zambia Bank.
Passing a vote of thanks, Buterla Investment Limited Chief Executive Officer, Happy Mbulo, said the Grow Zambia Agenda can be achieved if mining firms apply themselves.
Mr Mbulo implored the private sector to work closely with government to fully realise their potential in enhancing the production of goods and services associated with the value chain system.
