DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has successfully completed the drilling of three natural gas wells in the Mnazi Bay Block in Mtwara Region, with the discovery expected to increase the country’s current natural gas reserves of 57.54 trillion cubic feet.
Minister for Energy, Dr Juma Homera, said the government plans to officially launch the wells next week in Msimbati Village, Mtwara Region, where it will also announce the volume of natural gas discovered through the drilling operations.
Speaking to journalists today at the Ministry of Energy’s sub-office in Dar es Salaam, Dr Homera said the wells comprise two development wells and one exploration well. The drilling was undertaken by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) in partnership with investor M&P.
He said the discovery would further strengthen the country’s capacity to meet domestic energy demand while creating additional investment opportunities in the natural gas sector.
Dr Homera added that the government, through TPDC, continues to explore oil and natural gas in several areas across the country, including Eyasi-Wembere, Lindi-Mtwara, West Songo Songo, North Mnazi Bay and Ntorya.

He noted that seismic data acquisition activities are ongoing in the Eyasi-Wembere and Lindi-Mtwara blocks and are expected to be completed by December 2026.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway in the Ntorya Block for the drilling of a production well and the installation of gas processing facilities.
On developments in the Ntorya Block, Dr Homera said construction of a 35-kilometre natural gas pipeline from Ntorya to Madimba has reached 70 per cent completion and is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Gas production from the project is projected to begin in early 2027, with output expected to reach 40 million cubic feet per day.
The developments are expected to strengthen Tanzania’s domestic natural gas supply and support investment in energy-intensive industries, while contributing to the country’s broader economic and industrial development objectives.
