WASHINGTON, October 18. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump intends to use a 60-day window to evaluate how potential sanctions against Russia and related tariffs on other nations could affect the US and global economies, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters.
"The problem is these sanctions were not just sanctions on Russia. They include tariffs on a number of countries, India, for example, and others. And so, I think the president wants to take the 60-day period of time to sort of analyze what imposing both sanctions and tariffs will mean to the global economy and even to the U.S. economy," Rubio said.
The secretary of state noted that the additional analysis is prompted by tensions in global energy markets. He highlighted that energy supplies are facing pressures from the situation involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, and strikes on energy infrastructure during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, all of which drive global energy prices.
Rubio also pointed to India, which, he said, is "voluntarily diversifying their energy portfolio" but still imports "substantial amount of energy from Russia because it is hard to pivot everything from one day to the next."
"But they [India] are also an important ally and partner of the United States," he remarked, emphasizing that Washington must weigh these factors to find the optimal mix of sanctions and tariffs.
