As someone who has been enjoying the monster-infested streets of Paris (said in a French accent), Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse has made me fall in love with the decades-old series once again. Of course, many of these games were released before I was even born, and chances are, that’s the case for you, too--but don’t worry! You can catch up with this excellent giveaway for a chance to win 19 Castlevania games, two DLCs for the brilliant Lords of Shadow, and a book to boot. Try fitting that in a coffin.
While Belmont’s Curse is the most recent entry, the Castlevania series is full of bangers. The original games are retro goodness, seeing you deal with an onslaught of monsters in frustratingly fun ways. Sure, they have some annoying elements--looking near you, Medusa Heads. Not at you; you can’t fool me. But that’s part of the charm, and the earliest entries are a great way to see how far the series has come. Personally, I’m a big fan of Super Castlevania IV. That whip swing? Timeless.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow are excellent, too, with the former being one of the best in the entire series. Aria of Sorrow is well-paced (goodbye, tedious backtracking), with a big arsenal of weapons that all feel unique and fun to use. As an added bonus, completing the game unlocks a new mode that will bring a smile to anyone’s face after playing the older experiences.
Lords of Shadow and Lords of Shadow 2 were actually my first Castlevania titles, despite being remarkably different from the earlier games. They’re still great, though. While the latter suffers from FSSS (Forced Stealth Section Syndrome), its hack-and-slash gameplay, in a similar vein to God of War and Devil May Cry, will have character-action fans like myself having a great time. And while Mirror of Fate adopts a 2.5D perspective, it feels like a great balance between old and modern, bridging the gap between the classic Castlevania games and the hack-and-slash gameplay of the Lords of Shadow subseries.
Anyway, if you do manage to win this giveaway, you’ll get all the games I’ve mentioned, plus two DLCs for the first Lords of Shadow and a book celebrating Castlevania’s decades-long history.
