If you're new to pickleball, choosing a paddle can feel surprisingly complicated. Beyond the grip and surface, the shape of your paddle can affect everything from your reach and control to how much power you can generate.
Generally, pickleball paddles come in three main shapes: widebody, elongated, and traditional/standard. Each has its own sweet spot, reach, and balance of power and control, so the right one depends on how you like to dink.
1. Widebody Paddles
Widebody paddles have a broader face, giving you a larger hitting area and generally a more forgiving sweet spot. This Wilson FIERCE PRO uses a textured carbon fibre face with max grit to help deliver touch and spin. Its 13 mm polypropylene honeycomb core and single-piece construction are designed to provide responsive feedback and added handle strength, making it suitable for competitive games.
Its widebody design gives players a broader hitting, making them popular with beginners because there's more room for error when you're still getting used to your contact point. They can also offer good stability when returning shots and are useful for players who prioritise control and consistency.
Best for: Beginners, defensive players, and anyone who wants a forgiving paddle.
2. Elongated Paddles
As the name suggests, elongated paddles have a longer, narrower face. They can also generate more leverage, helping players who prefer a more aggressive, power-focused game. The trade-off is that the narrower face can have a smaller sweet spot, so you may need more precise contact.
The Selkirk LABS Project Boomstik Jack Sock Signature Pickleball paddle – Extended is an elongated paddle designed for intermediate to advanced players. Equipped with the revolutionary BoomCore core, it delivers explosive power, a solid feel, and consistent performance from day one, while maintaining the durability needed for aggressive play.
Best for: Aggressive intermediate to advanced players, singles, and anyone who wants extra reach and power.
3. Traditional Or Standard Paddles
Traditional-shaped paddles sit somewhere between the two. They tend to offer a balanced combination of power, control, and manoeuvrability, making them versatile for different playing styles.
The Franklin Sports Signature Carbon Fiber Series Paddle is a strong example, featuring a premium T700 raw carbon fiber surface for spin and control, a 13mm polypropylene core for a dependable feel, and a foam-infused edge guard that helps create an enlarged sweet spot. Its midweight design, premium moisture-wicking grip, and USA Pickleball certification make it suitable for both recreational and competitive play.
Best for: All-round players who want a balance between power and control.

So, which paddle suits you best?
Think about how you play. If you're still learning your dinks, volleys, and returns, a wider paddle with a forgiving sweet spot can make mishits less punishing. If you like aggressive drives, play singles, or want more reach, an elongated paddle could suit you better.
And if you're somewhere in between, a traditional-shaped paddle gives you a versatile starting point while you figure out your game.
