TOKYO (TR) – Adult video (AV) actress Iroha Hakata has lashed out at online trolls, warning that relentless sexual harassment and verbal abuse on social media is tantamount to “indirect murder,” reports the site for weekly tabloid Shukan Jitsuwa (Oct. 10).
In an impassioned post on X in the early hours of October 9, the actress condemned the widespread belief that women working in the sex industry are open targets for public humiliation.
“Can we stop the trend of thinking it’s okay to say whatever you want just because I’m an AV actress?” Hakata wrote. “People die, you know?”
Hakata emphasized that working in the adult entertainment industry does not equate to consenting to sexual harassment. She described the constant trampling of her dignity as an act that destroys the mind, delivering a stern warning to abusers: “I will not forgive those who cross the line.”
“Reckless generalization”
Her supporters were quick to back her up, with many calling for strict legal action against malicious netizens. However, the post also sparked a fierce debate about the harsh realities and stigmas of the adult industry.
When one user argued that AV actresses must simply accept societal disadvantages — such as future difficulties with marriage and corporate employment — Hakata fired back.
“Saying society doesn’t view us favorably is just your subjective opinion,” she retorted. She argued that critics often disguise blatant discrimination as “realistic disadvantages” to justify their own prejudices, calling the user’s argument a “reckless generalization.”
Hakata’s outspoken defense of her dignity is rooted in a troubled past. Prior to the online clash, the actress revealed a dark upbringing, disclosing that she was placed in protective custody at a child consultation center for six months during her high school years.
“Absolutely brutal”
Struggling to survive, she was forced to abandon her education to work part-time jobs. She eventually earned her high school equivalency certificate while working and fled her home at age 18.
“It’s absolutely brutal to be heavily handicapped and forced to play the same game as people from completely different worlds,” she wrote. Hakata explained she shared her story to serve as a “light” for youths struggling in similar abusive environments, while simultaneously warning young women against entering the adult industry based purely on naïve admiration without understanding the severe risks.
Hiroyuki Nishimura
The controversy echoes a long-standing debate in Japan over the societal value of nightlife and sex work. Previously, internet entrepreneur and 2channel founder Hiroyuki Nishimura sparked a similar uproar when he stated that industries that cannot be proudly explained to children should remain “in the shadows.”
While the internet offers anonymity, the Japanese government has been cracking down on cyberbullying. The Ministry of Justice continues to remind netizens that victims of online slander can file for the disclosure of a poster’s identity and pursue severe defamation lawsuits.
Hakata’s recent clash serves as a stark reminder: a person’s profession does not strip them of their legal rights, and digital violence can carry real-world consequences.
