Vance Visit to Chile Eyed for Late November

CHILE · DIPLOMACY

A Vance visit to Chile is being prepared for the second half of November, according to the Chilean outlets Meganoticias and Ex-Ante, but it is not confirmed. Neither the Chilean government nor the White House has confirmed the trip, and the dates could still change.

For US readers, it would be the highest-level trip to Chile by an official of the second Trump administration, Meganoticias said. Vice President JD Vance is preparing his first tour of South America, and the Argentine government is already making ready for the Buenos Aires stop.

What the Reports Say About the Trip

Meganoticias reported on 16 October that Vance is preparing a first South American tour for November and that Chile is among the destinations, citing sources close to the planning. Ex-Ante, a Chilean political news site, wrote the same day that senior government sources describe advanced talks between the governments of Kast and Trump.

Both outlets place a Chile stop in the second half of November, and Meganoticias points to the third or fourth week. Argentine government sources expect Vance in Buenos Aires in the third week of November for two to three days, Diario de Cuyo and Infobae said.

The trip is being handled with great secrecy for security reasons, so sources expect confirmation only at the last minute, Meganoticias said. The State Department announced on 16 October that Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Juan Pablo Segura, the assistant secretary for Western Hemisphere affairs, will visit Paraguay and Argentina between 19 and 26 October, Infobae reported.

Why a Vance Visit to Chile Would Matter

Meganoticias attributes the interest to the political closeness of the Kast government, and Ex-Ante says the trip would seal a rapprochement that cooled under former President Gabriel Boric. Chile joined the US-led Shield of the Americas, a regional crime-fighting coordination group, on 22 September, as covered in Chile Joins US-Led Crime Coalition and Drops Observer Role.

Both outlets say the sensitive items could also come up, including that pact, which the opposition and former presidents Boric and Bachelet have criticised, and Chile’s ties with China, its largest trading partner. Kast has said the pact means no loss of sovereignty and no treaty, Infobae reported on 25 September.

Washington has also raised concerns about the proposed Chile-China Express undersea cable over security and critical infrastructure, Emol reported on 7 October. Our report Chinese Undersea Cable to Chile Still Under Review Despite US Objections covers where that review stands.

The Strait of Magellan Row Before the Trip

The reports land during a diplomatic spat over remarks by the US ambassador in Santiago, Brandon Judd, at a trade event hosted by the shipping company CSAV. Judd said that if Chile wants help protecting its rights over the Strait of Magellan, it must also work with the United States on issues that matter to Washington, CNN Chile and Emol reported.

Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna replied that the strait “was, is and will always be Chilean” and that Chile does not need anyone’s support to defend its sovereignty. Judd later said his words were taken out of context and that he did not condition Chilean sovereignty, as covered in US Envoy to Chile Clarifies Magellan Strait Remark.

Fourteen opposition lawmakers wrote to the foreign minister asking that Judd be declared persona non grata, El Desconcierto said. The sources do not say whether the government has answered that request.

The Argentina Leg Comes First

Argentina is the stop that Argentine media treat as settled, with a meeting between Vance and President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace, as the centrepiece. Milei’s government wants Argentina admitted to the US Visa Waiver Program, which Chile already belongs to, Meganoticias and Diario de Cuyo said.

The visit would come as Argentina’s central bank rebuilds its reserves, with US$642 million of dollar purchases in the week to 16 October, as covered in Argentina Central Bank Buys US$642M in Week. Press reports of the bank’s daily data put gross reserves at US$50.236 billion at the close of that week.

Forbes Argentina listed trade, finance, energy, security, investment and infrastructure as topics of the bilateral agenda on 1 October. Milei’s contact with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on trade and investment is covered in Milei Rubio Call Covers Trade on 16 October.

Other Possible Stops

Meganoticias lists Brazil as a possible stop that depends on the 25 October runoff, because a win by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, whom Trump has backed, would make a visit to the new government more likely. Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, which are also in the Shield of the Americas, are mentioned as other options.

Canal 9 Bío Bío Televisión noted that Rubio spent a week in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia in September. The last sitting US vice president to visit Chile was Mike Pence in August 2017, when he met then-President Michelle Bachelet, Meganoticias recalled.

What It Means for You

For US investors and companies in Chile, a confirmed visit would signal that Washington is putting security and economic ties with the Kast government first, including the Shield of the Americas. Infobae said that framework also covers critical-minerals supply chains and digital infrastructure, and the resource base is described in Chile Natural Resources Explained 2026.

Travellers and expats should treat the November dates as provisional, because the plan is unconfirmed and Meganoticias says confirmation may come at the last minute. The wider setting is in Chile Geopolitics Explained 2026 and the Santiago City Guide for Expats and Visitors.

What Is Not Known

No official source has confirmed the Chile leg, the dates or the agenda, and the reports rest on unnamed sources close to the planning. Meganoticias speaks of the third or fourth week and Ex-Ante of the second half of November, and the White House has published no schedule.

It is not known whether Brazil, Peru, Ecuador or Colombia will be added, or whether the Magellan row will change the programme. What Chile would ask for and what Washington would ask on China are not stated in the reports.
