Welcome to the daily motorsport briefing for Thursday, 15 October 2026. Formula 1 is idle until Austin, but the rest of the paddock is not: NASCAR heads to Phoenix, the World Endurance Championship opens its Barcelona weekend, World Superbike is at Jerez, and Racing Bulls still have three drivers and two seats. All times below are Eastern.
The Storyline That Matters Most: Antonelli Has a 102-Point Cushion and Two Weeks of Quiet
Max Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix from pole, a result that felt like a title swing and was not one. The standings after Singapore have Andrea Kimi Antonelli on 340 points, George Russell on 238, Lewis Hamilton on 229, Verstappen on 221 and Charles Leclerc on 215. In the constructors’ table Mercedes has 578 to Ferrari’s 444 and McLaren’s 339.
The lesson is in the structure, not the winner. A win is worth 25 points on a normal Sunday, so Antonelli’s lead over his own team-mate is roughly four wins’ worth, and both of the drivers closest to him drive for his own team. Backfire has already walked through why Russell’s title math is so brutal. Round 18, the United States Grand Prix, runs 23–25 October.

Today’s Confirmed News
Racing Bulls still have not picked. Team principal Alan Permane said on 11 October that the team will settle its 2027 line-up “in the coming weeks”, with three candidates for two seats. He gave no date and said the team is not rushing. No candidates were named in the team’s statement.
Spire keeps Suárez. NASCAR announced that Spire Motorsports has confirmed Daniel Suárez will return to the Cup Series in 2027, one more seat settled before the silly season gets loud.
Peugeot brings a debut forward. The FIA WEC lists Peugeot moving the debut of driver Quinn to this weekend’s Barcelona round. The series has not detailed the change on its front page, so treat the specifics as pending until Peugeot confirms them.
Penalties and Stewards’ Decisions
The FIA stewards ruled on Sergio Pérez’s Singapore sprint collision with Lance Stroll at Turn 16 (Document 54, issued 10 October). They found Pérez predominantly at fault after he locked his front right wheel on an inside overtake, and judged a 5-second penalty appropriate. It was not applied, because Pérez’s Cadillac was not classified and a 5-second penalty does not normally convert into a grid drop. Without a classification there was nothing for the penalty to bite on.
In NASCAR, officials discussed the Charlotte incident involving Michael McDowell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at length and issued no penalties to either driver.

Phoenix: NASCAR’s Chase Weekend
NASCAR’s three national series run Phoenix Raceway this weekend, with Goodyear supplying “proven tire combinations” for all three. Ryan Blaney is a back-to-back Phoenix winner, which makes him a name to watch. Cup practice and qualifying run Saturday afternoon, and the race follows Sunday. Backfire’s Phoenix preview has more on the weekend.

Barcelona: Toyota’s Title Fight Reaches the Penultimate Round
The 6 Hours of Barcelona is round seven and the second-to-last of the season, with Monza on 6–8 November to close it out. In the Hypercar manufacturers’ standings, Toyota leads BMW and Ferrari. Free Practice 1 begins at 5:30 am ET on Friday and the race starts at 6:00 am ET on Sunday. For the stakes and the sister-car problem Toyota faces, see Backfire’s look at Buemi’s 100th WEC start.
