Caleb Williams is making some serious noise in the NFL, and his latest performance against the New England Patriots has earned him a major compliment. The Chicago Bears quarterback delivered another impressive outing on Thursday night, leading his team to a 30-24 victory while showcasing the playmaking ability that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Now, former NFL safety Donte Whitner has taken things a step further with a bold assessment of Williams’ place among the league’s elite quarterbacks. His comments reflect the growing excitement surrounding Chicago’s young signal-caller.
Donte Whitner Calls Caleb Williams a Top-Five NFL Quarterback
On October 23, ESPN’s Get Up shared Whitner’s assessment of Williams following the Bears’ victory over the Patriots. The former NFL safety did not hold back when discussing the quarterback’s current standing in the league.

That’s significant praise for a quarterback still in his third NFL season. Williams backed it up against New England, completing 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, he protected the football and made the plays Chicago needed to close out a tight game.
This win came at the same time that Williams recorded his second consecutive game throwing for over 300 passing yards after being hampered by an injury to his right hamstring. The Bears’ quarterback reportedly becomes the first Bears quarterback since Mitchell Trubisky in 2018 to post back-to-back games with over 300 passing yards.
The Thursday game became one more battle between Williams and Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who was among the first three choices of the 2024 NFL Draft. It is noteworthy that Maye posted higher stats, throwing for 321 yards and two touchdowns while going 24 of 31 passing. Nevertheless, his interception in the end zone in the second quarter helped Chicago take a 20-7 lead at halftime.
Despite the Patriots’ efforts to score again in the game, including their spectacular 48-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the first half, both Williams and the Bears kept their cool under pressure.
One of the key players of the game was rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III, who scored four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown. Cairo Santos made an important 58-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
The win moved the Bears to 5-2, strengthening their position as one of the NFC’s most intriguing teams. Whitner’s top-five claim remains an opinion, except Williams is giving supporters plenty of reasons to believe in his potential. If he continues delivering efficient performances while limiting costly mistakes, the conversation surrounding his place among the NFL’s best quarterbacks will only get louder.
