The Jigawa State Government says it is targeting the provision of 32 litres of potable water per person daily, with more than ₦2 billion committed to water supply and sanitation projects across the state.
The Managing Director of the Jigawa State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Engineer Abubakar Sidi, disclosed this during the 2026 Global Handwashing Day celebration in Roni Local Government Area.

Sidi said about 92 per cent of the state’s population currently had access to potable water, adding that the government was working towards universal access to clean water in line with Sustainable Development Goal Six.
He said the investment covered the construction of solar-powered boreholes and the conversion of existing hand-pump boreholes to solar-powered systems to improve access to water, particularly in rural communities.
The RUWASA managing director also said the state was intensifying efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation to protect public health.
Speaking at the event, the wife of the state governor, Hadiza Umar Namadi, urged residents, particularly students, to make handwashing with clean water and soap a regular habit.
She stressed that proper handwashing and environmental hygiene were essential to preventing the spread of infections and protecting children’s health.
Namadi called on communities to sustain the lessons learnt during the campaign, noting that access to clean water and improved hygiene required collective responsibility.
She also commended the state government for its investments in water, sanitation and hygiene through RUWASA and the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The celebration featured awareness activities on proper handwashing and personal hygiene, with soap distributed to students.
Global Handwashing Day is observed annually to promote handwashing with soap as a simple and effective way to prevent infections and reduce the spread of diseases.
