KUALA LUMPUR: National powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin said he was determined to defend his gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games after missing out on gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in August.
The 27-year-old successfully defended his men's under-72kg gold yesterday after clearing 216kg and 225kg on his first two attempts, the latter enough to crown him the champion at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Centre.
Bonnie said he was "proud" of his performance and dedicated the win to his wife, Clarissa Jude. The pair tied the knot last year.
"At the last Commonwealth Games, I won bronze, so I came here determined to bring home the gold," Bonnie told the Games organisers yesterday.
"I am very proud of my performance today.
"I want to dedicate this (gold) to my wife who has supported me a lot, thank you.
"I think she is watching now."
Bonnie had won gold in the men's lightweight class at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games but was forced to settle for bronze in Glasgow this year.
The Sarawakian is a two-time Paralympic gold medallist in the under-72kg class.
