Shillong, Oct. 18: Runners from Shillong, Sohra, Jowai and other parts of Meghalaya are set to join more than 5,000 participants at the fourth Oil India Tawang Marathon on October 24, reflecting the growing appeal of organised distance running in the state.
The marathon, held in Arunachal Pradesh’s Himalayan town of Tawang at an altitude of around 10,000 feet, has attracted registrations from across India and overseas. Participants from Meghalaya’s Khasi and Jaintia Hills are among those preparing to take on the demanding mountain course.
According to the organisers, registrations have come from Shillong, Mawlai, Mawiong, Nongrah, Upper Shillong, Sohra, Mawkyrwat, Mairang, Ri-Bhoi, Jowai and other areas of Meghalaya.
The participation highlights the state’s growing interest in endurance running, with athletes and recreational runners travelling beyond their home region to compete in challenging terrain.
Unlike city marathons, the Tawang race presents runners with the additional demands of high altitude, cold temperatures, mountainous terrain and reduced oxygen availability. The event features full-marathon, half-marathon, 10-km and 5-km categories.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu will flag off the October 24 race. Senior Indian Army officers are also expected to participate, alongside runners from several Indian states and countries including Kenya, Ethiopia and Nepal.
Actor Amit Sial, known for his film and OTT roles, is among the prominent personalities expected at the event.
Organised by the Arunachal Pradesh government in association with the Indian Army, the marathon will also feature a two-day bib expo on October 22 and 23, followed by cultural performances and a gala evening on race day.
The organisers have said the marathon also aims to promote responsible tourism and environmental awareness in Tawang, a region known for its fragile mountain ecosystems and rich cultural heritage.
