The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) extended the prevention alert throughout the national territory and both maritime sectors due to the persistence of heavy rains, thunderstorms and gusts of wind. Meteorological authorities indicated that the highest rainfall totals will be recorded between Monday, October 19, and Wednesday, October 21.
According to the report, the measure will remain in effect until 11:59 pm on Wednesday, October 21. The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA) indicated that the current weather conditions are due to the strengthening and better organization of a low pressure system located in the Caribbean Sea, north of the country. They explain that this phenomenon is driving a significant influx of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, favoring continuous rainfall.
Regions with the Greatest Expected Impact.
1
Maximum accumulated rainfall (120 to 280 mm per day): Highlands of Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Ngäbe Buglé Region, Northern Veraguas and Coclé.
2
Moderate accumulations (120 to 200 mm per day): Lowlands of Chiriquí, Central and Southern Veraguas, Los Santos, Herrera, West Panama, Sambú Region and Colón.
Risks and Safety Recommendations.
Sinaproc reiterates that the increase in rainfall carries a high risk of flash floods in rivers and streams, flooding in urban and rural areas, landslides in vulnerable areas, and falling trees or objects due to gusts of wind. Given this situation, the organization urges citizens to reinforce self-protection measures:
Protection of vulnerable people: Maintain special care and supervision of children and the elderly.
Avoid risk zones: Do not attempt to cross rivers, streams, or flooded streets, no matter how shallow the current appears. Also, avoid traveling on roads prone to landslides.
Home preparation: Prepare an emergency kit with water, medications, non-perishable food, and personal documents in plastic bags. Secure roofs and any loose objects that could be blown away by the wind.
Storm safety: During electrical activity, seek safe shelter and stay away from open spaces, isolated trees, metal structures, or bodies of water.
Authorities reiterated the importance of remaining vigilant and staying informed through official sources. In case of any eventuality or emergency, the public can contact the following numbers directly: 520-4425, 911, or 6998-4809.
