One shot clips the rim. Another bounces away. Stephen Curry keeps trying from different spots, but the ball will not go in. The sequence is hard to watch precisely because Curry is usually the player Golden State trusts to make those shots when a game is on the line.
The misses came during a stunning collapse against Memphis. The Warriors were ahead by 12 with 3:47 remaining, then went scoreless from the field the rest of the way as the Grizzlies closed the game on a 17-0 run and escaped with a 111-108 victory.
Steph Curry can’t hide his frustration as Warriors suffer crushing home-opener loss
Stephen Curry’s cold finish captured the Warriors’ late collapse
Curry finished with 24 points, but his shooting line told a different story: 5-for-15 from the field and 3-for-10 from three-point range. In the crunch-time clip, he goes 0-for-4, unable to turn any of those chances into the basket Golden State desperately needed.
The clip shows why the stretch felt so unusual. Curry tries from beyond the arc, pulls up from midrange and attacks toward the basket. The attempts do not look identical, but they end the same way: no points, no momentum, and no relief for a Warriors team watching its cushion shrink.
Still, the loss cannot be pinned on Curry alone. Golden State missed its final nine shots as a team, while Memphis found a way to score and take control. Ty Jerome led the Grizzlies with 28 points, and rookie Cameron Boozer added 25 as the comeback gathered speed.
With the game tied late, Boozer’s jumper gave Memphis a 108-106 lead with 20.1 seconds remaining. A costly offensive foul by Draymond Green, followed by a technical foul on coach Steve Kerr, made Golden State’s comeback attempt even harder. The Warriors had gone from controlling the game to chasing it in a matter of minutes.
Curry did not blame one player or one possession afterward. He acknowledged how painful it was to lose after the Warriors had put themselves in position to win. “There’s losses and then there’s ways that you lose like tonight that kind of sting a little bit more,” he said.
The Golden State Warriors will try to bounce back Saturday night against the Phoenix Suns, but Stephen Curry may not be on the floor. Golden State is playing the second game of a back-to-back and has started the season 0-2. After the loss to Memphis, Curry said he would “probably not” play in Phoenix, adding that he would talk with the team’s staff before a final decision.
