KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — PAS will join aligned Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties in challenging a notice to cancel the coalition’s registration in court and preparing for the Melaka state election.
In a statement posted on Facebook today, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party condemned the move, which was communicated through a notice from the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS) dated October 20.
PAS said the decision appeared to pre-empt a court ruling and restrict democratic rights guaranteed under the Federal Constitution.
The party also claimed the move reflected growing fear on the government’s part.
PAS maintained that PN’s administration and management had been conducted in an orderly manner and in accordance with the coalition’s constitution.
It said relations among PN’s component parties remained strong, except for one party which it claimed had distanced itself from the coalition and turned away.
Abdul Hadi said subsequent steps, including preparations for the Melaka state election and legal action to challenge the decision, would be taken jointly with PN component parties that remained aligned with the coalition.
PAS also thanked its members, supporters and fence-sitting voters who hoped for a change in the country’s leadership.
The party urged all parties to respect the law and democratic principles.
