Frequently asked questions
How to shop for fleece-lined tights
Start with how and where you plan to wear them. For dresses and skirts, look for a pair of tights that’s warm but streamlined enough to resemble regular tights; sheer-illusion styles use a skin-tone underlayer to create the appearance of sheer hosiery. If you want to layer yours under pants, avoid especially thick fleece, which can feel bulky. Rise is also worth considering: High-waisted styles can offer smoothing and tummy control, while a mid-rise may be more comfortable if you have a shorter torso. Finally, check the size range carefully, since sizing varies considerably between brands.
How to style fleece-lined tights
Because fleece-lined tights are usually thicker than standard tights, you’ll want to consider how much bulk they add, especially when layering under pants or wearing snug shoes. For the most part, though, they can sub in for regular hosiery, letting you wear dresses and skirts well into winter. For ideas on how to style black tights, try pairing sheer-illusion tights with a sweater dress and knee-high boots for the office or opaque black tights with a miniskirt and loafers for everyday wear. You can also experiment with tights trends, like burgundy tights with a neutral skirt and coordinating boots. For extra-cold days, slip a thinner pair under relaxed jeans or trousers.
How we tested
I’ve tested dozens of fleece-lined tights over several New York winters, wearing them with dresses and skirts, commuting in cold and windy weather, and layering thinner pairs under pants. Another Glamour editor also tested select pairs. We evaluated the tights for warmth, fit, comfort, thickness, appearance, and durability, including how well they held up to repeated wear and washing. We paid particular attention to whether they stayed in place, felt bulky, snagged or pilled, and actually kept our legs warm in cold weather.
