Dear Editor, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing developments at the Punanga Nui Market.
The market was originally envisioned and established as a dedicated venue for our Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) – a space where our local growers, farmers, low-income earners, and mamas could market their fresh produce and handmade crafts. It was built to support the grassroots of our economy, giving those who work the land or create from home a fair and accessible platform to support their families.
However, looking at a commercial foundation currently being erected within this precinct, it appears that the core purpose of the market is being side-lined. It seems that larger, established commercial businesses is being accepted and permitted to set up permanent structures in an area meant for small-scale community vendors. Then, who else is next!
To allow major commercial entities to encroach on this space feels like a mockery of why the PNM was created in the first place. It is tasteless and completely disregards the local vendors who have spent decades giving the market its authentic soul, culture and atmosphere.
With the CIIC (Cook Islands Investment Corporation) currently running public consultation surveys on the future direction of the market, the community needs to speak up. If we allow big business to take over the prime real estate meant for the little guy, where are our mamas and growers supposed to go?
We need to protect the integrity of Te Tāpora Kai and PNM as a genuine farmers’ and crafts market. I urge the decision-makers to reconsider who they are prioritising in this public space and remember the people it was built to serve.
Keep it grassroots
