The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that escalating conflict and fuel shortages in Yemen’s Taiz governorate are threatening water supply systems serving three million people, including at least 1.6 million children.
Al Jazeera reported early Wednesday, October 21, citing UNICEF Representative in Yemen Eakle Ayar.
According to the report, Ayar said disruptions to vital supply routes, including the Taiz–Aden corridor, had caused food and fuel shortages and tripled the cost of delivering water by tanker.
Meanwhile, diesel shortages threaten to shut down water pumps. The World Food Programme has also warned that wheat flour stocks in affected areas are nearly depleted.
“Children in Taiz have endured years of conflict and deprivation. They cannot afford to lose services that are essential to their survival,” Ayar said.
She called on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians, water supply systems, and healthcare facilities.
