IMPHAL, Oct. 18: One person was killed and four others injured after armed men attacked villagers at Chassad, a Kuki village in Manipur’s Naga-dominated Kamjong district, near the India-Myanmar border, October 17.
The injured were rescued by Assam Rifles personnel and taken to a hospital run by the paramilitary force, where they are undergoing treatment.
The injured include Chassad village chief Thangjahou Haokip, Phungtha village chief Seipao Haokip, Chassad Village Authority secretary Thanggin Thouthang and authority member S. Khailun Haokip.
According to villagers, Seipao Haokip was internally displaced after violence forced him to flee his native village elsewhere in the district.
Kuki villagers alleged that Naga militants ambushed the five men while they were repairing power lines. The circumstances of the attack and the identity of the person killed could not be independently verified.
The Kangpokpi-based Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) condemned the alleged attack, describing the targeting of civilians by “Tangkhul-led militants” as an act of “cowardice”.
The Tangkhuls are a Naga community, and the NSCN-IM (National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah) has a strong base among them.
