SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico — Residents of San Cristóbal de Las Casas are demanding immediate action from authorities to combat animal abuse after reports emerged of dogs and cats found dead, presumably poisoned, in the vicinity of the northern-western peripheral road.
The animals, described by neighbors as defenseless creatures seeking shade on the streets, were found in the area after being spotted roaming the neighborhood. Community members have expressed outrage, condemning what they describe as a “lamentable” and recurring act of cruelty.
According to local testimonies, the deaths appear to be the result of deliberate poisoning of food or water sources. “It is not the first time this has happened in San Cristóbal. The authorities know that animals are dying because people are putting poison in their food or water,” said one resident.
The community is calling on local officials to intervene and hold those responsible accountable. Specifically, residents are urging the municipal animal protection unit to take responsibility for the puppies, provide them with necessary veterinary care, and ensure they are adopted into safe homes rather than left to perish on the streets. As of Friday evening, local authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the incidents.
