Search operations to locate the injured elephant ‘Agbo’ are continuing today (19), with Sri Lanka Army personnel and wildlife officers conducting a joint operation in the Nachchaduwa area.
According to Minister of Environment Dammika Patabendi, a team of 75 personnel, comprising 65 Army personnel and 10 officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, has been deployed for the operation.
The Army team consists of nine officers and 56 other ranks, while the search resumed this morning with the participation of the Officer-in-Charge of the local Wildlife Beat Office.
The Minister stated that several wild elephants have been spotted in the search area, while local residents reported seeing Agbo in the area last afternoon (18).
However, authorities have yet to confirm the elephant’s exact location due to the vast extent of the area being searched.
Meanwhile, drones are already being used to assist the search, while a special surveillance drone belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force is expected to be deployed shortly.
Minister Patabendi stated that the joint operation will continue with the aim of locating Agbo and providing the elephant with urgent medical treatment. (Newswire)
