"1440p is the new 1080p" is something that has been thrown around a fair bit in the last few years, and for anyone that has shopped for a new monitor recently, the prices have certainly caught up with that reality. You can easily find a great-looking 1440p display for well under $200, but bumping up your resolution comes with a bigger cost within the PC itself. The graphics cards capable of pushing framerates worthy of your shiny new 1440p monitor are more expensive than they've ever been, and while the jump in resolution can absolutely be worth it, sticking with 1080p is looking like one of the smartest things you can do for your setup.
