The Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has recovered 320,000 yaba pills from a concealed compartment built beneath a truck's floor in Mansurabad, Chattogram city.
Police arrested the truck driver, Md Ruhul Amin, 45, in connection with the incident. The truck used to transport the drugs was also seized.
According to the preliminary investigation, the consignment was being transported from Cox's Bazar to Dhaka, where members of a drug trafficking syndicate were supposed to receive it.
Deputy Commissioner of Police of the DB (South) Sheikh Shariful Islam confirmed it at a press conference at the media centre of CMP's Dampara Police Lines today (21 October).
He said police received confidential information that a truck carrying a yaba consignment from Cox's Bazar was travelling towards Sagarika via Kotwali.
Acting on the information, police set up a checkpoint in Mansurabad. When the truck arrived at around 1:50am, officers stopped it and conducted a search.
They eventually discovered a specially constructed hidden compartment beneath the truck's floor and recovered 320,000 yaba pills from it.
Sheikh Shariful Islam also said the DB was recently investigating reports of yaba being brought from Myanmar in exchange for fertiliser and cement.
Asked about the planned distribution points after the consignment reached Dhaka, he said no previous cases had been found against the arrested driver.
He added that extensive questioning of the suspect would help investigators learn more about the consignment's destination and others involved in the operation.
Legal proceedings against the driver are underway at Double Mooring Model Police Station.
