The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday announced a handful of roster moves as they gear up for a Week 6 matchup with the Washington Commanders.
Veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk's practice window was opened as part of the moves. The club also promoted defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo to the active roster and signed linebacker Eugene Asante to replace him on the practice squad.
Kirk has been working through a calf injury since early in training camp. He was designated as a returnee before final cuts which meant he automatically counted toward their eight IR returns. Now he'll have a week to practice leading up to Week 6, though it's unclear if he'll be ready to play when the 49ers host the Commanders. If he is, he'll immediately bring veteran depth to a receiving corps that desperately needs reinforcements.
Okoronkwo has had a whirlwind couple of weeks with San Francisco. He was let go before Week 5, but signed to the practice squad and elevated to the active roster the next day to suit up for the 49ers showdown with the Seattle Seahawks. Now he's been promoted back to the active roster. It's unclear whose roster spot he is taking.
Asante gives the 49ers some additional internal depth with LB Dre Greenlaw suspended and LB Garret Wallow dealing with a hamstring injury. He's yet to play in an NFL game after signing with the Miami Dolphins in 2025 as an undrafted rookie out of Auburn. He spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons before joining the UFL's Houston Gamblers. He was with the Arizona Cardinals practice squad up until his release on Oct. 13.
