However, Ipswich refused to give up, reducing the deficit in the 90th minute through Zian Fleming, who converted a penalty to set up a tense finish. City eventually held on to secure the win.
The victory gave City a six-point lead at the top of the table ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who had a game in hand, while Ipswich remained 10th.
Elsewhere, Chelsea moved up to fourth place following a 2-1 away victory over Everton, with Pedro Neto scoring twice in the second half.
The result also ended Chelsea’s run of 22 consecutive Premier League matches without a clean sheet.
Liverpool climbed to fifth, one point behind Chelsea, after coming from behind to beat 10-man Brentford 2-1.
Keane Lewis-Potter put Brentford ahead before Victor Munoz equalised for Liverpool, while Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal to complete the comeback.
Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi scored his first league goal of the season to inspire Fulham to a 1-0 victory over Hull City.
