When it comes to TV shows packing a punch in their season finale, there is no better example than The Diplomat on Netflix.
**Spoiler alert: This article contains details from the entire fourth season of The Diplomat, now streaming**
If you came into Season 4 wondering how on earth the show would up the ante after the jaw-dropping and gut-punching Season 3 ending — which, just to remind you, featured Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler discovering her husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) authorized a covert mission to steal an apocalypse-level weapon from a sunken Russian ship — you will surely be surprised by just how much Debora Cahn and the writers one-upped themselves.
After a season filled with moments of terrifying concessions, power dynamics shifting, and twists that could give any viewer whiplash, the eighth and final episode concludes just as the season starts: with a bang and a question of what comes next.
Didn’t have time to watch yet? Or did you watch but fear you may have missed a thing or two? No fear, we’re here to help. Whatever the reason, we’ve got you covered.

The Diplomat Season 4 Ending Explained
The season ends with Kate, Hal, Billie (Nana Mensah), and Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval) handing in their resignations in protest of Grace Penn and her affront to the political process… let’s back up just a little bit. Coming into the finale of The Diplomat Season 4, things are very much in a period of extreme tension, as President Penn has all but fired Kate for her direct disobedience regarding her meeting with Bethan Vaughn (Jodie Whittaker), a.k.a. the UK’s new PM. This puts them at odds both personally and professionally, given that Hal is still very much part of the Penn Administration and guilty by association.
It’s only after Penn and her allies retaliate against Stuart (Ato Essandoh) for submitting an official cable to the State Department’s Dissent Channel, which is meant to be confidential and provide policymakers with a protected way of voicing their concerns. While it’s laughed at by Eidra (Ali Ahn) and Billie — the Dissent Channel isn’t exactly taken seriously — it quickly snowballs into a reason for an earth-shattering change of scene. Rather than outright firing Stuart for his disapproving message, Penn has the deputy chief of mission recalled back to Washington, where the group assumes he will become obsolete.
“Ganon read your cable, he agreed with what you were saying, he agreed, and he took it to the President,” Kate tells Stuart as he says, “It’s the Dissent Channel; she can’t do that.”
“She can’t, but she did,” Kate responds, adding that he has no legal case against Penn because she is technically not firing him, just reassigning him to the U.S. and letting him stew in nothingness.
Back at the villa after speaking with Stuart and Eidra, Kate confronts Penn, not about Stuart’s reassignment, but as a last-ditch effort to try and talk her down from pulling up to the G7 with guns blazing and a “take no prisoners” attitude regarding Russia and the UK. While Kate tries to get the point across that it’s a strategically risky and careless move to force the UK’s hand into refusing Russia’s entry into their waterways — Bethan Vaughan approved a Russian mission to retreive the bodies of the sailors who were on board with The Poseidon — especially by threatening them with warships. Penn, however, hears absolutely none of it and tells her that while she has been hesitant to fire Kate because of Hal’s position in her administration, she is growing tired of the constant fight and is more inclined to get rid of her than ever.
The combination of their argument and Stuart’s firing are just two of the major contributing factors to Kate handing in her badge the next day, but the real nail in the coffin is Penn opening up the stage during the G7 meeting by admitting that the U.S. went into UK waters without permission and went after Russia’s weapon. She then challenges her ally nations to try and stop the U.S., which draws gasps from the crowd, but no
“Prime Minister Vaughan, with all the wisdom of a three-day tenure, prefers to welcome the Russians in. We feel quite strongly she should revoke the invitation and, as you’ll learn later today, she hopes to arbitrate that impasse here. She’ll tell you the Americans are prepared to fire on any country that interferes with our mission. Let me clear, friends: She is absolutely right,” Penn tells the other nations, adding that if they refuse to back her and the U.S. up, she will end the alliance and walk away from the table completely.
It’s only the other six world leaders in the G7 summit agree to continue on with the conference that Kate, making a spur-of-the-moment decision, stands up, walks over to Hal and tells him that she loves him, and then hands in her badge and publicly resigns from her position as U.S. Ambassador to the U.K.
“I am tendering my resignation,” Kate says, stopping the meeting dead in its tracks, before walking out. “I am no longer able to support the actions of the Penn Administration.”
As the meeting continues and the camera follows Kate down the hall and out of the building, the viewer watches as, in quick succession, Billie, Ganon, and then Hal each hand in their badge and walk out. The final shots of Season 4 see the group outside of the building and approaching a group of journalists to make a statement. Safe to say that Season 5, should it be renewed for a fifth season, is going to be wild.
