Greek prosecutors have ordered forensic experts to accelerate preparations for the exhumations of victims of the Tempi train disaster, following the selection of a Dutch institute to conduct specialized laboratory tests requested by the victims’ relatives.
The order was sent two days ago by Aikaterini Papaioannou, head of the Larissa Prosecutor’s Office, to the forensic experts appointed to oversee the exhumations and examinations.
The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has indicated that it can carry out the required specialized laboratory tests, subject to the conditions outlined in its correspondence with the authorities.

They are required to confirm that the NFI can undertake the examinations and clarify the specific scientific and technical conditions under which the tests can be performed.
The experts must also establish the requirements for the type and quantity of samples needed, as well as the procedures for their collection, storage and transportation.
Exhumation date to be set
The order also directs the experts to arrange a specific date for the exhumations as soon as possible, in coordination with the competent authorities.
It emphasizes that the process must ensure the presence of all necessary personnel, the proper collection of the required samples and the accurate documentation of every relevant action.
Authorities must also safeguard the integrity and identification of the samples in accordance with accepted scientific standards and the requirements of the laboratory conducting the examinations.
The procedures concern tests sought by relatives of those killed in the Tempi train disaster, one of Greece’s deadliest rail accidents.
