The last sermon of Father Patricio Sánchez came to light, delivered just minutes before he died crushed by a wooden Christ statue in Guayaquil. In an almost prophetic tone, the parish priest reflected: “we’re all going to die,” while questioning the time we squander on vain things.
Redemptorist priest Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53 years old, passed away this Saturday, October 17, in Guayaquil (Ecuador), after a cross positioned on the wall behind the altar fell on him while he was celebrating Holy Mass. The priest was the parish priest of the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil, through a statement signed by Cardinal Luis Cabrera Herrera, has expressed its deep sorrow and joined in prayer for the eternal rest of his soul, extending its closeness and affection to the Redemptorist community, family, and friends. May the Lord welcome him into his Kingdom and grant consolation to those who mourn his passing. Rest in peace.

Will the church take this tragic accident seriously? The Church should update its internal regulations: crosses, images, and large decorative elements must be made of lightweight materials (such as fiberglass, resin, or high-density foam), and properly anchored. This isn’t about removing the symbol; it’s about ensuring no one else gets killed. After the Titanic, the maritime industry changed lifeboat regulations. After several plane crashes, aviation tightened safety and design protocols. Following the collapse of the Twin Towers, skyscraper construction and evacuation standards were rewritten. Serious accidents almost always leave a clear lesson: the rules must be changed to prevent repetition. In the case of the priest who died crushed by a wooden cross that fell from the wall during Mass in Guayaquil, the lesson is evident. A cross or any heavy religious object placed above the altar or in transit areas doesn’t just endanger the priest—it also puts nearby parishioners at risk.
