Overview:
‘The Social Reckoning’ explores Facebook’s controversies, algorithmic influence and corporate accountability in the age of AI.
Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong deliver performances that keep the technology-focused drama engaging.
Despite its relevant themes, the sequel struggles to match The Social Network’s dialogue, emotional depth and cinematic impact.
Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Social Reckoning’ revisits the controversies surrounding Facebook, examining how algorithms, corporate priorities and the pursuit of engagement can influence society.
A follow-up to David Fincher’s acclaimed The Social Network (2010), the film shifts its attention from the creation of a technology giant to the consequences of its growing power.
However, despite its timely subject and talented cast, the sequel struggles to deliver the urgency and cinematic impact its story demands.
A Story About Algorithms, Power and Accountability
Set against the controversies that emerged around Facebook in 2021, the film follows Frances Haugen, a company employee who becomes concerned about the platform’s internal practices.
Played by Mikey Madison, Haugen discovers troubling connections between Facebook’s engagement-driven algorithms, the spread of harmful content and the platform’s potential to amplify social divisions.
Alongside Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz, portrayed by Jeremy Allen White, she collaborates in order to make their worries known to the general public. The investigation of the two serves as the story line of the movie and demonstrates the importance of whistleblowers and investigative journalism.
On the other hand, Mark Zuckerberg, portrayed by Jeremy Strong, is a billionaire businessman who is in a position that has him under more and more pressure as he prepares for congressional hearings. It is the position of a corporation that has to balance its interests with its obligations to the users.
It is an intriguing plotline especially in the age of artificial intelligence and misinformation. However, the realization of the film falls short of its subject matter.

Performances That Keep the Film Engaging
Mikey Madison brings both vulnerability and determination to Frances Haugen, playing a professional caught between her ethical concerns and the risk of taking on a powerful employer.
Jeremy Allen White is convincing as Horowitz, the journalist’s point of view when it comes to the investigation. The interactions between the two characters make for some of the most interesting parts of the film, bringing a human element to a narrative filled with corporate decisions and digital technology.
Jeremy Strong’s version of Zuckerberg is intentionally different from Jesse Eisenberg’s Zuckerberg in the original.
Rather than an aspiring young entrepreneur, Strong portrays Zuckerberg as a seasoned executive who carries so much influence because of his detached nature. This makes the character fascinating, but he doesn’t have much opportunity to develop.
Aaron Sorkin’s Writing Falls Short
The trademark dialogues are still present and Sorkin’s flair for messy conflicts within organizations is evident too. However, the film fails to incorporate the wit and the emotional intensity that made The Social Network such an engaging story. Characters tend to speak the same way and the dialogue appears to be scripted only to convey the witty remarks.
Moreover, the film fails to capture the extent of the ramifications of social media use since it concentrates on the political conflicts in the United States and the decision-making process at Facebook. The outcome of such a choice is a serious drama but not a global one.

Final Verdict: An Important Story, an Uneven Film
‘The Social Reckoning’ arrives with a subject that deserves serious cinematic attention. Its examination of algorithmic influence, corporate accountability and the responsibilities of technology companies remains relevant in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital platforms.
Yet the film’s significance is also its biggest challenge. Viewers are no stranger to the debates it takes up again, while the film provides little new insight to balance out its sometimes inconsistent rhythm and lack of drama.
In all, it’s a good film for anyone interested in technology, journalism, and the ethics of social media. But those looking for the edge and conflict between characters like that of The Social Network may be left wanting.
There are certainly some interesting things to say about Sorkin’s film, but unfortunately, it doesn’t manage to bring them all together.
