The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) will approach the Supreme Court against the bail granted to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg, two of the seven accused in the Zubeen Garg death case.
The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Ms. Mahanta, the cultural icon’s co-singer, and Mr. Garg, his cousin, on October 9 and October 16, 2026.

“After taking legal opinion, we have decided to move the Supreme Court against the bail granted to the two accused persons,” SIT chief Munna Prasad Gupta told journalists on Sunday (October 18, 2026).
Getting bail did not amount to acquittal, he said, adding that the trial against the two accused persons was continuing routinely before a fast-track court.
“The fast-track court has completed the examination of 136 eyewitnesses and recorded their statements,” Mr. Gupta said.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025 while swimming in the sea off an island in Singapore. He was there for a musical event.

Ms. Mahanta, arrested by the SIT on October 2, 2025, and lodged in Haflong Jail, secured bail on a ₹50,000 bond with two sureties for the same amount.
Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police officer, has been in Baksa Jail since October 2025. He faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The other accused are event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, band-mate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and bodyguards Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya.
The iconic singer’s death triggered outrage in Assam, with many fans yet to come to terms with the loss.
