Four vigilantes have been killed by gunmen in Shurum village, Dorowa Babuje, in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau state, in another attack that has heightened concerns over the safety of residents volunteering to protect their communities.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:56 p.m. on Friday, when the assailants stormed the community and opened an attack on the vigilantes who were on duty.
The victims were reportedly keeping watch over the area when the gunmen struck, killing all four. Details about the identities of the deceased, the number of attackers and whether anyone else was injured were not immediately available. Blueprint reports
The incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of community-based security volunteers, who often undertake night patrols and other protective duties in areas facing persistent security threats.
Community mourns slain vigilantes
A member of the community, Bulus Bature, confirmed the killings, describing the incident as painful and disturbing.
He said the victims were carrying out their responsibility of watching over the community when the attackers arrived and killed them.
Bature lamented that people who had volunteered to protect their neighbours and help prevent attacks were themselves targeted by gunmen.
The killing of the vigilantes is likely to deepen anxiety among residents, particularly those who rely on local security arrangements to complement the efforts of formal security agencies.
Community vigilantes often serve as an additional layer of protection by monitoring movements, raising alarms when suspicious activities are detected and sharing local intelligence with security personnel. However, their familiarity with their communities does not necessarily shield them from armed attacks, especially when they lack adequate equipment and support.
Berom youth group condemns attack
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident.
Tengwong condemned the killing of the four vigilantes, describing it as another disturbing attack on people who had taken responsibility for helping to safeguard their communities.
He called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice.
The BYM spokesperson expressed concern that residents could not continue to live in fear while individuals volunteering to protect their communities were being attacked and killed.
He also appealed to the government and security agencies to strengthen security around vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.
The association’s call reflects wider concerns over the protection of rural settlements in parts of Plateau state, where residents have repeatedly faced security challenges.
Security agencies yet to confirm incident
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach security operatives for official confirmation of the attack were unsuccessful.
Consequently, details concerning the circumstances surrounding the killings, the possible motive of the attackers and any steps taken to track them remained unclear.
It was also not immediately known whether security personnel had been deployed to the affected community following the incident.
The absence of official confirmation leaves important questions unanswered, including whether the assailants had been identified by residents and whether the attack was preceded by any warning signs.
Residents and community leaders are expected to look to the relevant authorities for an investigation and measures to prevent a recurrence.
Renewed calls for protection of vulnerable communities
The latest killings have again drawn attention to the security challenges confronting communities in Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau state.
For residents who depend on night patrols and local vigilance to deter attacks, the loss of four volunteers could create additional fear and uncertainty. It also raises concerns about how communities can sustain local security arrangements without exposing volunteers to unacceptable risks.
While community-based security groups can provide useful local intelligence and early warnings, their activities need to be supported by effective coordination with formal security agencies, timely responses to distress calls and credible investigations into attacks.
The government and security authorities face renewed pressure to improve protection for vulnerable settlements, investigate the killings and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
For the bereaved families and the Shurum community, the immediate concern remains the loss of four people who were reportedly on duty to protect others.
Until the attackers are identified and brought to justice, the incident is likely to remain a source of grief and insecurity for residents of the affected area.
