DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has conducted a technical audit of electricity distribution systems to identify causes of power losses and develop measures to reduce them, as part of efforts to improve efficiency and strengthen energy security.
The week-long exercise, conducted by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the African Energy Commission (AFREC) in Dodoma, brought together more than 60 engineers and technicians from the Ministry of Energy, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) and Powerhut.
The audit involved collecting technical and operational data to guide investment planning and identify practical measures to minimise electricity losses in distribution networks.
Speaking during a review meeting in Dodoma, Assistant Electricity Commissioner in the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Christopher Bitesigirwe, said the government is implementing various measures to improve energy efficiency, including reducing losses in electricity distribution systems.

He said the initiatives are guided by the National Energy Efficiency Strategy 2024–2034, which seeks to establish minimum energy performance standards for equipment, reduce energy losses and strengthen the management of energy consumption.
“Tanzania recognises energy efficiency as a strategic pillar for strengthening energy security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and building a more resilient and competitive energy sector,” he said.
The audit is conducted under the Efficiency First: Powering Africa’s Sustainable Development project (2024–2028), funded by the Kingdom of Denmark and implemented in collaboration with AFREC.
