Guy Ritchie could hardly have written a darker script. A judge under police protection, alleged contacts with a suspected drug trafficking clan and an investigation into attempts to sabotage court cases affecting Spain’s ruling party. These are the allegations and developments casting an increasingly troubling shadow over Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his Socialist Party.
For readers outside Spain, the names may be unfamiliar. The stakes are straightforward. Investigators are examining whether a coordinated network sought to undermine the police and judicial proceedings threatening powerful political interests.
The October developments bring that investigation into sharper focus. They concern the safety of a judge, the alleged targeting of her work and demands for documents that could help establish who commissioned and paid for services under scrutiny.
A judge under protection
Beatriz Biedma, the judge who investigated the prime minister’s brother, David Sánchez, has been given police protection following allegations concerning threats to her safety. The Interior Ministry’s decision followed witness testimony incorporated into the investigation involving former Socialist activist Leire Díez.
According to Europa Press’s account of the proceedings, former judge Luis Sáenz de Tejada has been summoned to appear as a suspect on October 28.
A witness identified by investigators as connected to a suspected drug trafficking clan told the Guardia Civil’s specialist investigative unit, the UCO, that Sáenz de Tejada had spoken about “eliminating” Biedma. He expressly denies making that statement and denies harassing her. Those allegations remain under investigation.
Biedma also reported an alleged car following incident. Sáenz de Tejada disputes that account, saying he was approximately 450 kilometres away and offering evidence of his location.
The competing accounts must be tested. The principle at stake is clear. A judge investigating people connected to political power must be able to work without fearing retaliation against herself or her family.
Police protection is a practical response to a reported risk. Politically, the circumstances demanding that protection deserve serious attention.
Why this goes beyond allegations of financial corruption
Calling this simply another corruption scandal risks overlooking the alleged conduct now being examined.
Euro Weekly News reported in May on the earlier investigation into an alleged network seeking to disrupt corruption inquiries. That coverage explained the suspected operation and reported Díez’s denial of wrongdoing.
The significance of the October developments lies in the alleged targeting of a judge and the continuing effort to establish how the suspected network operated.
Judge Santiago Pedraz is investigating an alleged organisation linked to former Socialist Party organisation secretary Santos Cerdán and Díez, whose suspected activities included destabilising judicial and police proceedings affecting the party and the government.
Suspected organised criminal activity is therefore part of the investigation itself. It is not merely a description attached by political opponents.
Financial corruption concerns the abuse of power for improper benefit. An alleged coordinated effort to undermine investigators raises an additional question. Were people attempting to weaken the mechanisms meant to expose wrongdoing?
That does not establish that Sánchez directed such an operation or that his government controlled the police. It makes the alleged interference with independent scrutiny central to understanding this case.
The contracts investigators want to examine
The latest demands for party documents could help investigators establish responsibility.
On October 20, Pedraz gave the Socialist Party, known in Spain as the PSOE, two days to provide information about lawyers and consultants contracted between 2021 and 2025.
As Europa Press reported, the court said it had received no response to an earlier request. It wants documents establishing who was hired, how the contracts were authorised and what services were delivered.
The PSOE has sought additional time and guidance from Spain’s General Council of the Legal Profession, arguing that disclosure could compromise professional confidentiality.
That explanation must be considered alongside the court’s need to examine the arrangements. Establishing who commissioned work, who paid for it and what was supplied could help distinguish legitimate services from any payments connected to alleged wrongdoing.
Political associations alone cannot settle those questions. Documents and evidence must.
The earlier “mafia” debate has a sharper context
Euro Weekly News previously examined why critics were calling Spain’s government “the mafia”. That was an examination of political rhetoric, rather than a judicial finding about the government. The current allegations demand precise scrutiny of suspected criminal organisation, interference and intimidation, rather than reliance on a provocative label.
What Sánchez denies, and what remains unresolved
Sánchez has denied knowing about or approving Díez’s alleged activities.
In statements reported by EFE in June, he said he had neither authorised nor been informed about them, adding that he would never have tolerated such conduct.
The proceedings also have important limits. On October 9, Pedraz declined to place the PSOE itself under formal investigation at that stage, following the position of anticorruption prosecutors and pending further inquiries.
Questions remain about who authorised payments, what internal controls existed and whether the party benefited from the alleged activities. Allegations against individuals do not establish criminal responsibility on the part of the whole party or the prime minister.
They do leave Sánchez facing political questions about judgement, supervision and the people entrusted with influence.
The test is whether power can be held accountable
The protection of a judge and the investigation into alleged efforts to undermine proceedings give this story a significance beyond party rivalry.
Independent police officers and judges protect the public by investigating powerful people as well as everyone else. Any attempt to intimidate them or sabotage their work would threaten that protection.
The continuing investigation shows those institutions carrying out their responsibilities. Political leaders should help establish the facts and explain the safeguards operating within their own organisations.
Sánchez’s denial addresses his claimed lack of involvement. Leadership also requires answers about how influence was exercised around him, whether warnings were missed and how any failures of oversight will be addressed.
The courts must determine whether crimes were committed and by whom. The public can demand political accountability while that process continues.
A crime thriller can end when the credits roll. Spain needs answers that survive examination.
